Essential Oil Staple Kit

Like certain food staples, I always make sure I'm fully stocked with certain essential oil staples.

The following 6 pure essential oils are always within arms reach because I have found them to be extremely beneficial in countless ways.

My suggestion is to start with 2-3 oils and then gradually build your kit.

When purchasing any essential oil, be sure they come from a reputable source.

Lavender
Calmative, sedative, antiseptic, anti-fungal, analgesic, anti-inflammatory

Eucalyptus
Balancing, antiviral, decongestant, expectorant, analgesic, antiseptic

Rosemary
Mental stimulant, antidepressant, antibacterial, analgesic, antiseptic

Tea Tree
Anti-fungal, analgesic, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, immunostimulant

Peppermint
Antiseptic, anti-infectious, mental stimulant, expectorant, decongestant, insect repellent

Bergamot
Antidepressant, antiseptic, calmative, sedative, antibacterial, household odors

Care and Storage

Essential oils are living things that should be treated with reverence.

Pure essential oils should always be kept in dark glass bottles (amber/cobalt) and stored away from both artificial and natural light, and heat. Ideally, a small wooden, ceramic or metal box with a secure lid makes a great home for these precious gems!

Shelf Life

Pure essential oils (if stored properly) have a shelf life of 2-3 years with the exception of all citrus oils. These oils will typically last 6-8 months.

Caution Care

*Essential oils are highly flammable, therefore should be kept away from any open flame.

*Should not be used close to eye area.

*Only certain gentle essential oils should be used on babies.

*Should not be used internally.

*Homeopathic treatment is not compatible with essential oils.

*Avoid sun exposure when applying any essential citrus oil to the skin. Citrus oils cause the skin to be sun-sensitive. Also, avoid using any citrus oil while taking a bath.

*When using essential oils topically, a carrier oil is highly recommended.

Recommended Carrier Oils

Jojoba Oil - this oil is not actually an oil. It’s a natural, soluble wax which gives it an excellent shelf life. It’s virtually “scent free” and is quickly absorbed into the skin.

Excellent for skin and hair.

*This carrier oil is my own personal favorite.

Grape Seed Oil – this oil is light in scent and texture. It is beneficial to the skin and is quickly absorbed.

Sweet Almond Oil – this oil is light in scent and medium in texture, and has many valuable natural health benefits.

Measuring Guidelines

For large areas – use 10-15 drops of pure essential oil to 2 ounces of carrier oil.

For small areas – use 2-3 drops of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.

When essential oils are used wisely and respectfully, they have the amazing ability to provide natural and effective health and beauty results.

About a year and half ago, I proudly highlighted and reviewed one of my favorite Etsy Shops, Designs by MC.

However, the review was focused on MC’s jewelry.

Since then, I’ve discovered that she has branched out into designing a unique line of greetings cards.

And can I just tell you? Her cards match the quality and care as her jewelry.

Honestly, these cards outweigh any store bought card I have ever seen because they’re literally a work of art!

Last week, I noticed one of the girls I work with carrying a really cool-looking handbag.

I said to her, "Wow...I love your handbag, it's really nice. Is it a Kate Spade?"

As I was walking past the Benefit cosmetic counter a few days ago, I noticed a cool-looking display that immediately caught my eye.

Calendula Ointment for Skin Care

This past summer I had oral surgery performed on a severe tooth abscess that required draining, which left a temporary bruise on the skin along my jawbone.

Having had positive experiences using natural healing remedies in the past, such as, essential oils, herbs and homeopathy, I decided to investigate an alternative means to help heal my bruise.

Many years ago, I read something about the healing ability of Calendula for skin care concerns, so I went to my local vitamin shop and purchased a tube of Calendula ointment from Boiron.

I applied the ointment 2-3 times a day, and within a week my bruise faded dramatically. Within two weeks, it was completely gone.

Afterwards, I began applying it not only on my bruise, but my entire face and neck as well. I wanted to see what it would do for my overall facial skin, and I have to be honest, my skin looked great.

The main thing I noticed was that the thin broken capillaries around the base of my nose began to fade over several days. How to Shape Your Eyebrows

Think of your eyes as pictures, and your eyebrows as the frames.

If your eyebrows are not shaped properly, they can take away from the beauty of your eyes.

Often clients have asked me, “What is the proper shape for my eyebrows?”

Because each person has different shaped eyes, the shape of their eyebrows will vary. However, there is one similar and sure way to find the shape that’s right for you.

Here it is.

Tools:

*a mirror
*eyebrow brush
*a long pencil
*a quality pair of tweezers
*cotton balls
*aloe vera gel

Step 1

Take a look at your eyebrows in the mirror, then take your pencil and place it from edge of your nose to your eye area, as demonstrated above. Any hairs on the bridge of the nose after the pencil line should be tweezed out.

Step 2

Now looking straight ahead, place your pencil from the tip of the nose to the natural arch of your eyebrow. Make sure that your pencil goes over the pupil of your eye, as this is the secret to finding your natural arch. You need to leave the hair line a bit thicker from the bridge of the nose to the arch. Tweeze up to the arch making as straight a line as you can.

Step 3

Now take your pencil from your the edge of your nose to the end of your eye. Any hairs after the line of the pencil should be tweezed out. Tweeze a thinner line from the arch to the pencil.

After you have finished shaping your brows, use a cotton ball soaked in some aloe vera gel and gently dab over the area to reduce any redness or irritation.

Tips:

*Once you get the proper shape for your brows, you should tweeze them at least once a week to remove any stray hairs to retain the shape.

*You should never tweeze above your eyebrows, only below.

*Use a brow powder and brow brush to fill in your brows.

For as long as I can remember, whenever I applied lipstick and lip liner to a client, I had always applied the liner first and the lipstick second.

Typical way, right?

That is until I started working for Bobbi Brown Cosmetics, back in 1998.

And the reason being is that once you apply your lipstick, you can better see where the lip liner should go. It’s like learning how to color in reverse. Also, when you apply the lip liner afterward, you’ll find it much easier to blend the lipstick and liner together so you don’t get a harsh line.

The whole point of using a lip liner is to shape and define your lips, but you don’t ever want to see the liner.

When choosing a lip liner, be sure to select a color that is within the same color family as your lipstick. It should either match the color perfectly, or be slightly darker.

Example: If you use a lip color that has a cool undertone, you'll also want to use a liner with the same tone; not something with an warm undertone.

Cool undertones have a blue/pink base.

Warm undertones have an orange/yellow base.

How to:

*First, apply your lip color of choice by using a lip brush. I know many women don’t like using a lip brush, however if you want a polished-looking lip, it’s important to get comfortable using one.

*When applying your lipstick, fill in your entire lip from top to bottom.

*Next, take your lip liner and begin outlining your lips, staying inside the lip color; fusing the liner into the lipstick.

*If you wish to even out your lips, gradually extend the liner above or below the lip you wish to balance. Do this very subtly.

*Once you get the shape you want, begin blending the lip liner into the lipstick, but only along the edges.

*If by chance you add too much liner, simply take more lipstick on your brush and blend it into to the liner, which will soften it.

*After you finish, stand in front of a large mirror to see if you notice any differentiation between your lipstick and lip liner. If you do, use a bit more lipstick or liner to defuse it, that’s your choice.

I know this may seem like a completely different process of applying lipstick and lip liner, but as with anything you first try, the more you do it the more proficient you become.

At the time I was using Retin A, therefore was looking for a moisturizer that contained an SPF.

How To Apply A Sunless Tanner

For those of you who choose not to expose your skin to the sun, but would still like to have a natural-looking glow of sun-touched skin, sunless tanning is the way to go.

However, in order to achieve an even application of color, there are certain steps you can take that will assist greatly.

Personally, I always apply a sunless tanner in the evening, a few hours before going to bed.

I do this for two reasons. One, I seem to have more time in the evening, therefore I can do a more thorough job. And two, I don't like to put on clothing after I've applied a sunless tanning product because of the possibility of staining.

How to:

*Always take a shower or bath before applying a sunless tanner, so your skin is clean and fresh.

*Use a non-oily body scrub to exfoliate dead skin and dry patches. This makes for a more even distribution of color. Be sure to concentrate on rougher areas of the skin, such as elbows, knees, and feet.

*Rinse scrub thoroughly, so there is no gritty residue left on your skin.

*After towel drying, allow your skin to air-dry completely for at least 30 minutes.

*I prefer using a sunless tanning lotion or cream, rather than a spray. I have found that a spray works better if someone else is applying it rather than myself. I've never had much luck with sprays, so I avoid them.

*Use your bare hands, not plastic or rubber gloves when applying a sunless tanner. Using gloves will only cause an uneven application, trust me.

*Start by applying the lotion or cream to your feet, then gradually move up to your face. Be sure to apply a thin and even coat.

*In order to apply a sunless tanning product to your back (which can be challenging), you can purchase a backhand body lotion applicator which has a long handle (similar to a back scratcher).

*After completely applying the product to your entire body, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and dry them. Then apply a small amount of self tanning product to the top of one hand, and then use the top of the other hand to massage it in; making sure to include the topside of all ten fingers.

*Wait at least 30 minutes before going to bed; allowing the product to dry.

Additional Tips:

*If you do enjoy lying in the sun, a sunless tanner is great for enhancing or prolonging your tan.

*Build your sunless tan gradually by applying it 2 or 3 days in a row.

*When using a sunless tanner, be sure to pat (not rub your skin) when towel drying after a shower or bath, which assists in prolonging your tan.

*In between using a sunless tanner, use a lightweight body lotion to keep your skin moist, which will also assist in prolonging your tan.

When I first inhaled Chloe's latest fragrance, I wasn't quite sure whether I really liked it.

However, after a few hours of sampling it by applying some to my own skin, it really began to grow on me. A lot.

Back when I first started working in the beauty industry, one of the things that use to frustrate me about many cosmetic companies, was that they seemed to neglect a large percentage of women.

Women of color.

Being a makeup artist, I know the importance of clearly and thoroughly instructing someone on how to duplicate a certain makeup look.

Please keep in mind that wet-wash cleaners do a much more thorough job of deep cleansing than spray brush cleaners.

Also, if you travel frequently, spray brush cleaners are a great way to clean your brushes until you get home to give them a thorough shampooing.

Last week while I was in Sephora, I had the immense pleasure of experiencing Tom Ford’s latest fragrance, Grey Vetiver.

While I was in NYC last Spring, I also had the opportunity to experience his whole line of fragrances in Bergdorf Goodman and thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

I could tell that a great deal of thought, investigation, and passion went into his collection.

Tom Ford fragrances are extremely well-made.

The thing I especially enjoy about Grey Vetiver is that it’s fresh, clean, and crisp, yet also has an earthy quality. I think it could be worn within any season, as well as day or night.

I can honestly say that after spraying some on the top of my hand, I found myself sniffing it all day long. It truly is an alluring fragrance.

I happen to be a big fan of the essence vetiver, but what’s so unique about this fragrance is that the iconic vetiver note achieves it’s full potential with a construction of enhancing elements.

Top notes: orange flower, grapefruit, and aromatic sage lend freshness.

After taking a course in aromatherapy, I discovered that the essential oil German chamomile was extremely beneficial in reducing the appearance of broken capillaries on the face.

And after trying it for several weeks, I indeed found it beneficial.

Broken capillaries are those tiny, thread-like veins which commonly appear on the cheeks, chin, and around the nose area.

How To:

Hand Care and Hand Creams

Hands are my favorite body part, so taking care of mine has always been one of my top grooming priorities.

I enjoy keeping my hands well-manicured and in good condition.

Caring for you hands doesn't have to cost a fortune, nor does it have to take a lot of time.

Tools:

*An apricot exfoliating scrub
*Hand cream
*Moisturizing gloves

How to:

You can either choose to do this separately or while taking a bath or shower.

I recommend doing this once or twice a week to keep your hands in good shape.

1- While you hands are moist and soft, apply about a tablespoon of apricot scrub in the palm of your hand and begin gently, but vigorously massaging the scrub all over you hands; making sure to include the topside of your hands and the skin between your fingers.

2- Next, begin gently massaging the scrub along the cuticle area of each one of your fingernails (this will effectively soften and remove unwanted cuticle skin).

3- Rinse off using warm water; making sure to remove all traces.

4- Towel dry hands.

5- While hands are still moist, apply about a quarter size of hand cream into the palm of one hand and then begin massaging it evenly over both hands; making sure to work the cream into the cuticle area of each finger.

6- *Optional: if your hands are excessively dry, slip on a pair of moisturing gloves and leave on for 20 minutes, then remove.

How To Apply Face Powder

The most effective way to apply face powder is by using a puff.

It allows for a more smooth and even application; resulting in a flawless, professional finish.

When applied this way, it will also give tremendous staying power to your foundation.

Tools:

*Loose powder

*Medium size cotton powder puff

*Kleenex

*Face powder brush

1-After applying your foundation shake a small amount of face powder onto an open Kleenex.

2-Gently pat the puff into the Kleenex; making sure to get the powder evenly distributed over the entire surface.

3-Next, take the puff in both your hands with the powdered side facing you and then close the puff; bringing the edges together as if it were a taco shell.

4-Using both your hands, begin rubbing the closed puff together with your fingers, which will allow most of the face powder to disappear from the surface; working it's way deep into the puff. You only want a minimal amount of powder on the surface of the puff.

5-Next, place your fingers through the satin band and begin firming pressing, then rolling the puff over your face; making sure to cover every area. If you need more powder repeat the steps above.

6-If you accidentally apply too much powder, gently use a face powder brush to remove.

Additional tips:

*Do not rub or massage the puff over your face. This will only remove your foundation.

*Use a minimal amount of powder. Too much powder will give you a cakey-look.

*Be sure to wash your powder puff every couple of days with warm water and a mild soap to keep it clean and sanitary; leaving it out to air dry.

How To Apply Under Eye Concealer

I would like to start off by saying that when it comes to applying under eye concealer...

...less is more.

The whole point of concealer is to distract from an area. Therefore, the more concealer you apply, the more attention you will draw to it. There are some cases when it will be impossible to totally conceal under eye darkness, but you can always minimize.

Selecting the proper concealer shade is very important.

Quite often many woman will select a shade that is too light. And in doing so, will end up highlighting the area of concern.

When it comes to selecting the correct shade, you want to select a color that closely matches your skin (or perhaps a tad lighter). This is why I highly recommend going into a department or cosmetic specialty store and trying a few.

I'll be honest, it's challenging to find a concealer that works. Some are either too thick while others are too thin. The best concealers are the ones with allot of pigment, but have a light consistency.

Tools:

*A concealer brush - I know that many women prefer using their fingers when applying under eye concealer, but from my own professional experience I suggest using a concealer brush.

When using your fingers the concealer will not adhere to the skin properly because each time you touch skin to skin you actually keep removing the concealer. Also, by using your fingers it will cause you to initially apply too much.

How To:

*After selecting the perfect concealer shade, apply some to the top of either one of your hands. Preferably between the webbing of your thumb and index finger. This will allow the product to warm and soften for a smoother application.

*Take your concealer brush and tap the flat side lightly into the concealer, then brush it back and forth over the top of the same hand to thin out the product. This will also assist in getting the concealer on both sides of the brush.

*When first applying concealer under your eyes always start from the outer corner, then gradually move inward and up toward the eyelash line. By doing this you'll find it easier to control where you wish to place the concealer.

*Be sure to apply the concealer only to the dark area under your eyes, not below it. Be very specific.

*Do not swipe the concealer on, tap it. By taping it you will slowly build coverage and avoid applying too much.

*Once you get the concealer on, use the sides of the brush to feather the edges so that it blends naturally into the rest of your skin.

*If you choose to use powder to set the concealer, please be sure to use as little as possible. Too much powder will cause a dry-flaky effect.

I personally don't use powder when applying concealer to a client because it looks more natural.

You'll find that if you apply your concealer as I have shared on this post, unless you tend to be extremely oily around your eye area, you won't need to use powder in order to set it.

Additional Tips:

*If you use an eye cream before applying your concealer, be sure to blot the under eye area with a soft tissue to absorb any excess. Too much eye cream will cause your concealer to breakup and move.

*You can also apply concealer to the inner corners of your eyes (the bridge) and also to the your eyelids to lighten up the eye area.

*Stay away from using green under eye concealer. Green is only effective in concealing areas on the face that are prone to redness not darkness. Green concealer will actually turn a dark area purple.

*If you have any doubt about which concealer shade is right for you, always choose one that has more yellow than pink. Yellow conceals better.

Remember...concealing is an art. So the more you practice, the better you become.
